It is compared to space as in the Buddhist teachings which say \u201cEmpty your mind that is filled with avarice,\u201d to the lyrics of a song singing \u201ccarpeting my heart with silk\u2026 alighting on your heart as a butterfly.\u201d In her A Room in My Heart, Sister Claudia Lee Hae-in also regards the heart in the same light as a room, writing \u201cOn the wall of my heart\/ Putting up a calendar of joy\/ Born anew I wish to be every day.\u201d <br \/>\r\n\tAs a matter of fact, it\u2019s no accident that a room is referred to as a space of the mind. It is because a room reveals clearly the economic situation, life style, aesthetic taste and the state of mind of the inhabitant. Luxurious furniture will explain the riches of the occupant and socks and underwear rolling on the floor will indicate an undisciplined life style. Posters of Jazz and punk rock singers on walls represent free spirits and open-mindedness whilst closed heavy curtains will imply a lonely and antisocial personality. Therefore, if an artist chooses a specific space, not for others but for him or herself and turns it into his or her room, it will be most likely to disclose his or her aesthetics, inner life or view of the world, to a certain or substantial extent. Lee Jee-young manifested this point through her previous exhibitions. She called her make-believe stage sets and rooms where the artist herself or a hired model acted, \u201cstage of mind.\u201d<br \/>\r\n\tThe room of the mind or the stage of the inner world built by Lee Jee-young turns into staged photography with the involvement of painting, sculpture and installation and the presence of a model. Blurring the boundaries of mediums that modernists had stuck to, such a complex and multilayered practice is a paragon of mixed media and hybridization that postmodernists have a liking for, and yet it\u2019s no longer considered to be new. The approach of Lee Jee-young is quite reminiscent of that of Sandy Skoglund (born in 1946), who is now one of the world master photographers of our time. The semblances found in both are, markedly, that they employ actual objects or spaces but transform them into an unusual reality or fantasy space by employing a compulsive and obsessive use of color and repetitive patterns; and also both the artists exhibit meticulous diligence when making and painting every object needed for sets. The two share common attributes in that they also reach the finale of painstaking stage setting by placing models in their elaborately built sets and taking pictures. However, there are differences. Not always but occasionally, Skoglund exhibited the actual sets along with her photographs. In other words, the sets Skoglund built were movable. She also used durable materials such as casting resin to make objects with effort and sold them as artwork. In contrast, the sets of Lee Jee-young were built in her studio and thereby weren\u2019t able to move to exhibit. Moreover, the objects Lee made are of Styrofoam or corrugated board, so they are more like peripherals, not possessing independent significances, and ephemeral, causing them to be unable to be sold as individual pieces. Most importantly, the big difference lies in that the staged photography by Lee Jee-young is autobiographical by and large whereas Skoglund excludes any sort of personal narratives. Therefore, the staged set of Lee Jee-young is \u201cher stage of mind.\u201d<br \/>\r\n\tMy Chemical Romance, one of Lee\u2019s recent works clearly demonstrates the similarities and differences between the two. The pattern of caution and warning with black diagonal lines against yellow is repeated, obsessive-compulsively, over the floor, walls and pipe lines; and the extreme density of the pipes and steam rising from where pipes break indicates the set of a huge machine room and yet it evokes a scene from a sci-fi or an action movie Bruce Willis might have starred in. Amid such chaos, however, a woman in black is not in haste. She gestures to straighten out the situation but seems deprived of the will or the physical power to do so. And there is a big black dog slowly walking out of the set to the bottom left, indifferently or helplessly. It seems nearly pointless to define the relationship between the woman in black and the black dog. It is because not only do they make no gestures to recognize each other\u2019s presence but look in the opposite direction. They do so in the midst of an emergency where the signs of caution and warning are everywhere and the steam discharge doesn\u2019t seem to stop at any time. Repetitive connections and disconnections of communication and its subsequent chaos are what makes the stage set of Lee Jee-young evocative of that of Skoglund.<br \/>\r\n\t However, through the work title, My Chemical Romance, Lee Jee-young manifests that the disengagement of communication and the stage of chaos is from within her. The approach is unlike Skoglund\u2019s which represents the absence of communication and apocalyptic isolation that all our contemporaries including the artist suffer; instead, Lee Jee-young clarifies that it is more about \u201cher\u201d chemical romance. The work is the reenactment, through the implication of chemistry, of the ending of \u201cher romance,\u201d and indifference and lethargy resulted from such failure. The chemicals used to stage the drama of \u201cher romance\u201d that tumbled down are glycol-based fluids which are evaporative as steam and marked by yellow and black paint and plastic pipes. <br \/>\r\n\tThe same goes for Gamer. Every man today plays the survival game for survival\u2019s sake or his profit, but what Lee Jee-young means by \u201ca gamer\u201d in her work is not an individual in a broad sense. The figure in Gamer tries to assemble gigantic Lego blocks alone, matching colors and exploring on formative beauty. Therefore, the Gamer Lee created in 2011 can\u2019t be viewed to represent the survival game in which average members of contemporary society compete. It rather embodies Lee Jee-young herself who has chosen art as her career. Of course, artists play games with others in society. The goal of artists is also survival and success in society but it is achievable only through the disinterested trade with color and forms. Though artistic ways and means, and further the themes can be prearranged like ready-made Lego blocks, choosing and assembling to his or her ideology and taste is the very aspect of an artist\u2019s share of work. In her eclectic practice of painting, sculpture, installation plus photography, Lee Jee-young has made works with ready-made Lego since 2007 and adds, in 2013, a new approach to it. It\u2019s in video. It is to show the dismantling process of My Chemical Romance, or what Lee calls the process of \u201cde-installation,\u201d in a reverse play as if it were of a process of construction. In other words, the video plays the timeline of deconstruction in an order of construction. Being screened backwards through time, this new piece with Lego blocks differentiates Lee\u2019s approach from that of Skoglund. In fact, the Lego game is quite similar to Lee\u2019s art. It is not a flat but a spatial play, and meets with childhood that Lee Jee-young is also keen to; also it seeks after new designs and contemporary tastes as much as the art of Lee Jee-young does.<br \/>\r\n\tPanic Room completed in 2010 is one of Lee\u2019s representative pieces, where the childhood experience becomes a theme of \u201cstage of mind\u201d as in the Lego game piece. The act of a child-adult takes place on a stage where everything is in endless checkerboard patterns including not only the walls, the floor, a closet, a couch, a table, but also huge pins, a pair of spring scissors and a glass. The floor and walls are skewed with the table toppled down and the pins and scissors are flying up in the air. Among a dizziness inducing place, a woman is trying to hide herself inside the closet.<br \/>\r\n\tEmploying ocular illusion based upon the figures and grounds of optical art, Panic Room adapts the Jonah complex for a contemporary set, the indications of which include hiding oneself in a secure and hermetic space from chaotic, menacing surroundings. As the Biblical Jonah evaded danger in the belly of a great fish under hostile circumstances, the woman in Panic Room, who is viewed as Lee\u2019s alter ego for her work is almost always autobiographical, tries to seek refuge inside the closet in the midst of a tilted, jagged space. She is looking for a place of regression, which can protect her from outer threats as safely as the belly of Jonah\u2019s whale or mom\u2019s womb. Lee has a good command of optical art, but it seems that she is one who is always skeptical of her being a successful artist and is timid about the skewed art world that is found to readily attack her. With such fear, she strives to hide herself inside a comfortable and dark closet or womb. As a matter of fact, the desire for success and the fear of failure is a leitmotif in Lee\u2019s \u201cstage of mind.\u201d In this sense, I'll Be Back; Resurrection; Reaching for the Star; and Never-ending Race are considered as variations of Panic Room. Through this series of work, Lee makes a contradictory attempt; that is, creating dazzling stage sets to play the fear of art-making and the desire to escape from the art world and at the same time, trying to get social recognition as an artist. However, the attempt is not always enough and her self-actualization as an artist is forever tardy. What\u2019s worse, the fear of art never fails to threaten her. Lee\u2019s recent piece, This Is Not Enough, unbeatably exhibits her contradictory \u201cstage of mind.\u201d<br \/>\r\n\tA woman is sitting on the ground, looking out from a bee hive. The dress she wears matches the honey combs in color like a protective coloration and her long hair mingling with them is hardly discernible unless looked at closely. The woman\u2019s forehead and eyebrows are somewhat visible through only one comb among many. No drones or worker bees are found on this hive stage. Therefore, we have an impression that a new queen led all the other bees off to another colony, leaving the woman behind. The hive is not the one with bountiful pollen and nectar or of vivacity with baby bees; instead, only the woman-queen bee is abandoned alone. For models in Lee\u2019s stages are always her alter ego, this desolate hive is unmistakably a room of her mind. In a bleak room where nutrients for art are running dry, in a barren room where even waxes become desiccated is sitting the artist, being devastated. Sitting there but still looking outside, and leaning on the hope that her artistic success is on its way and her desolate life is the source of her art, she seems to dream the advent of her art, with bees flying industriously and nectar and waxes flowing. To Lee Jee-young, lacking is constantly associated with the desire for self-actualization as an artist.<br \/>\r\n\tLee Jee-young\u2019s staged photography is evidently the result of negative perceptions on living conditions of artists. Skepticism and lacking gives off amid the use of obsessive color and repetitive patterns; anxiety about future and a sense of despair toward art comes out impliedly in this psychedelic reality. Nonetheless, the artworks describing the lives of artists fatigued with struggles in art will be marked as some of Lee Jee-young\u2019s best. <br \/>\r\n\tI would say the chances are high that Lee Jee-young will stand as one of the most significant artists in Korean art history. First of all, Lee\u2019s work is provocative and sensational in that, through the use of mediums, she disintegrates and integrates the boundaries of conventional art. Moreover, it is noteworthy that she takes on the practice of combining handiwork with much effort and elaborate techniques, in particular, when today\u2019s art world is full of vain conceptualism void of a master\u2019s spirits or techniques. Lee\u2019s artistic capability includes a broad range of contemporary art mediums including painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video; and her artistic concepts are both contemporary and profound. Let me conclude my essay on Lee Jee-young by summarizing her art making process. Lee Jee-young spends two or three months making objects, installing the set and test-shooting with her digital camera. She then confirms all the necessary conditions for the final shoot while planning the positions of models. Finally, adjusting the positions and postures of models, she finalizes her staged photographs in 4 by 5 negatives.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<b>\uc774\uc9c0\uc601\uc758
