JeeYoung Lee constructs rooms imbued with personal stories and emotions, often drawing inspiration from everyday encounters and events. She builds temporary walls and fills the space with dozens, or even hundreds, of handmade objects—both large and small—creating dreamlike or magical landscapes infused with memory. She then photographs the completed scene. This is her ongoing series, Stage of Mind—a stage of the heart built through intense labor and long hours. The resulting photographs, often resembling paintings or digitally manipulated images, are in fact the culmination of this physically demanding and time-consuming process.
In her previous works, Lee filled the space with physical objects. In contrast, her latest works take the opposite approach. She empties the room and fills it instead with artificial mist created by a smoke machine. Amid the haze, only a faint figure, captured in a specific pose, emerges.
While the Stage of Mind series involved constructing spaces to confront her inner emotions through high-intensity labor, Into the Mist seeks self-discovery through emptiness—filling the space with only color and the mysterious atmosphere created by the particles of mist. This state of emptiness naturally draws the viewer inward.
The exhibition title, Into the Mist, originates from a memory at a ski resort. In a dense fog that blurred her vision on the slope, the artist caught a glimpse of life’s course. Eyes wide open yet unable to see even a step ahead—still, we move forward, quietly and resolutely. That dreamlike isolation led her to focus more deeply on her inner self, and she chose to express this experience through photography.
She paints the space in her studio in colors that evoke specific emotions, steps into it herself, and poses in ways that reflect those feelings. The titles of the works—Compulsion, Swamp, Dialogue, and others—refer to psychological states.
Gazing at the figure barely visible through the fog, viewers are invited into a shared emotional experience with the artist.
While each person’s memories may differ, human emotions are deeply universal and shareable. Through this exhibition, JeeYoung Lee offers a space to encounter the emotions she has recorded and invites us to quietly look into our own hearts as well.
